Watford captain Deeney to speak at Sport Industry NextGen: A celebration

Watford FC captain Troy Deeney will share his leadership story at Sport Industry NextGen: A Celebration on 2nd February.

Taking place at Village Underground, Shoreditch, the celebration evening will combine educational and inspirational content and high-level networking as the second group of Sport Industry NextGen Leaders prepare to kick off their Leadership Package. Sport Industry NextGen in partnership with Barclays identifies tomorrow’s leaders, rewards their potential and nurtures their talent.

The evening session will begin with networking drinks before the 2017 Sport Industry NextGen Leaders – announced last month – take to the stage for the first time.

Throughout the evening the audience will also have a chance to hear from the 2016 Sport Industry NextGen Leaders, who will reflect on a year that has seen them challenged mentally and physically as part of their Leadership Package. With more speakers still to be announced, Deeney will then end the evening, expanding on his career journey so far as a leader in sport.

Deeney, who scored 13 goals last season to help secure the club a top eight finish, will discuss his recent rise over the past few seasons. Overcoming a brief stint in prison in 2012, the young footballer developed into the Premier League captain he is today. The 28-year-old will also cover the responsibilities of the modern day captain and lessons he has learned from his past to help mentor youngsters rising through the ranks, as well as the launch of the Troy Deeney Foundation.

Deeney commented: "It is great to see young leaders within the industry given these opportunities. I am a similar age to many of the Sport Industry NextGen Leaders, it is my job to lead my club on and off the pitch so it will be interesting to hear how these guys do it in the business world. They are the future of the sports industry, so it’s right that they get the support they deserve. I am looking forward to meeting and speaking with them on the night.”

The second year of the programme, which identifies, rewards and develops the rising stars of the sport sector, saw an influx of entries from more than 100 organisations. The selected group of 30 for 2017 come from across the industry with major brands, social media platforms, rights holders, broadcasters, agencies and eSports well represented in addition to entrepreneurs and community programmes.

The new Sport Industry NextGen Leaders are at the forefront of the industry from leading organisations including; adidas, Twitter, YouTube, UFC, RFU, EFL, Sky, Mindshare, CSM, Synergy, Fnatic, ESL and many more.
